WHO IS METRIC LANE?
Without Michael Martin’s creative energy, determination, and vision, the story of Metric Lane could have been very different. Having worked with some of the biggest names in music, Michael brings decades of experience to this exciting project, proving that even world events can’t stop the creation of something extraordinary.
Metric Lane is the brainchild of British-born pianist and keyboard virtuoso Michael Martin. Founded in 2020 during the global pandemic, Metric Lane blends modern reggae influences from artists like Morgan Heritage, Stick Figure, and Rebelution with the timeless sophistication of songwriting legends such as Sting and Bob Marley.
Michael’s musical journey began at the age of seven when he first laid his hands on a piano. A graduate of the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, he studied Jazz Composition and Big Band Arranging with aspirations of becoming a jazz pianist. However, reggae’s irresistible rhythm and soul were always in his blood. A chance encounter with reggae legend Burning Spear catapulted Michael into his first international tour, performing across Europe and the United States.
Michael’s career as a musician is as diverse as it is impressive. He has played alongside iconic reggae artists including Aswad (famous for hits like “Don’t Turn Around” and “Give A Little Love”), Ziggy Marley, Barrington Levy, Maxi Priest, Janet Kay, Carol Thompson, Freddie McGregor, Dennis Brown, Pato Banton, Sly and Robbie, Bitty McLean, and Ali Campbell of UB40.
Beyond reggae, Michael’s talents have seen him collaborate with global superstars across genres. He has toured with East 17, The Spice Girls, Gary Barlow, Billy Paul, Ronnie Jordan, Coolio, and Blazing Squad, where he served as Musical Director. He has also held key roles as Musical Director for Jamelia, Bond String Quartet, and the internationally renowned violinist Vanessa Mae, as well as Musical Supervisor for performances with the Lyon Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Opera House.
When not on stage, Michael is dedicated to education, sharing his passion and expertise with students of all ages. He has taught piano and music theory at Stockholm International School and the Institute in London, inspiring the next generation of musicians.
Metric Lane is more than just music—it’s a story of resilience, creativity, and boundless energy. With Michael Martin at its core, Metric Lane continues to push the boundaries of reggae, weaving it with elements of jazz, pop, and classical sophistication to create something truly unforgettable.
